What to expect at Outback Pioneers

Our mission is to to inspire and educate current and future generations to value, preserve and experience the real Australian outback.

When you work with us, you are part of a friendly community that is the very essence of Australian outback life. You’ll be supported by a small crew that comes from different places and backgrounds but ends up feeling like family.

Most of the Outback Pioneers positions are seasonal but there are sometimes opportunities for the right people to stay with us year-round to help in administration, reservations, accommodation and retail roles.

We can help you find temporary rentals – sometimes sharing with other crew members. Rentals are much cheaper than the city and most are within walking distance of work!

You’ll have an adventure, you’ll have fun, you’ll work hard and you’ll experience a different way of life.

Longreach. It’s far from ordinary!

Longreach is 1180 kilometres from Brisbane, on the Tropic of Capricorn, not far from the edge of the desert in western Queensland. With sparse population and big landscapes, you know you’re in a different world here!

The small town has all necessities but not too much in the way of cutting-edge fashion! Our idea of cutting edge is something to shear sheep! But there’s always online shopping for your favourite brands and we might surprise you when we dress up for an evening out.

We have cafés and lattés but you’re more likely to find people discussing cattle prices than coffee blends! Fast food is still a hearty country sandwich and slow food is a BBQ or something on the campfire!

Nightlife? We make our own, getting together with friends and workmates around a BBQ by the river or in one of the small local restaurants.

Outback Pioneers Map

“I love how quiet Longreach is but it has everything. You can see a movie or go to dinner with friends, or go to the races – I love dressing up for the races – you can have a social life but you’ve still got the feel of the outback.”

Kinnon Family

Meet the family behind Outback Pioneers

The Kinnon family have lived the outback life of graziers for decades and own two cattle and sheep stations near Longreach.

They founded Outback Pioneers (which started in 2006 as Kinnon & Co) to help support their outback life and the community through times of drought. What was born of necessity became a passion for sharing the local heritage and lifestyle with visitors. It’s a passion that shines through all the experiences and has won them many major tourism awards. Beyond the joy of sharing their world with you, the Kinnon family hope they can inspire you to help preserve the Australian outback they love.
