Whether you pack up the car for a road-trip (4WD not necessary), take the ‘Spirit of the Outback’ train from Brisbane via Rockhampton, hop on a coach or fly, you’ll get a sense of the vast distances of outback Queensland. Depending on your choice, you can be in Longreach in 2-3 hours or 2-3 days. Either way, prepare for a total change from coastal and city life.
The best time to come is April-October when the weather is beautiful and all of our experiences are operating. If you’re taking an outback trip in summer, stay at our The Staging Post accommodation and don’t forget to visit The Station Store.
For speed, for a short break and for a simple, direct route, a flight from Brisbane or Townsville is the ideal choice. Qantas offers daily return flights from Brisbane to Longreach. Rex Airlines flies twice weekly from Townsville to Longreach via Winton. If you’re doing one of our holidays or have pre-booked our experiences or accommodation, we can meet you at the airport for a transfer into town.
Many people choose to travel at least one direction on the iconic ‘Spirit of the Outback’ train which travels from Brisbane to Longreach via Rockhampton twice a week. This is a 2-day journey with a choice of onboard seats and sleepers. Our Unleash Longreach holiday is timed for the Wednesday train arrival. Some tour operators offer our holidays with rail travel as an inclusive package. Ask us for details.
If you have the time, there’s no substitute for taking an overland trip by car, RV or motorhome. You don’t need 4WD and there are many fascinating outback towns to explore along the way. Break your journey for an overnight or take a few days if you want to see more or have youngsters aboard. There are a few alternative routes to choose from – you can travel out one way and return another.
If you’re travelling from interstate or internationally or simply want to ask a few questions, our friendly reservations crew is here to help.
