Winton Discovery Experience

Follow in the footsteps of a Banjo Paterson and dinosaurs on this full-day Winton tour.

You can’t pack much more experience into an outback day! This memorable tour deeper into the Queensland outback gives you a local’s insight into the rich heritage of the Winton region, including the award-winning Australian Age of Dinosaurs museum.

Our air-conditioned coach tour travels the 180 kilometres from Longreach to Winton to a town that holds a special place in local history and pre-history. Winton is known for its dinosaur fossils and the award-winning Australian Age Of Dinosaurs Museum is one of the highlights of the tour – an opportunity to learn more about the amazing creatures that once walked this part of the world.

This is Banjo Paterson country too and the town’s landmarks pay tribute to this Australian hero and his famous song ‘Waltzing Matilda’.* You’ll enjoy a leisurely lunch at the legendary North Gregory Hotel, which originally opened in 1879 and where Banjo Paterson is said to have first performed Waltzing Matilda.

You’ll also visit Corfield and Fitzmaurice – a magnificent example of a general store, which opened in 1878 and is heritage-listed by the National Trust. Today it houses a great selection of crafts and a mini museum. Our tour includes the Diamantina Heritage Truck and Machinery Museum, Winton Opal Gems and other local attractions too.

*Please note the Waltzing Matilda Centre was badly damaged by fire in June 2015 so we have substituted Corfield and Fitzmaurice until the centre reopens.

The experience departs from Longreach Saturday at 6am, returning 4pm. (In our peak season, we sometimes also run the experience on Mondays – details will be available closer to departure dates.) Bookings essential. Please let us know when you book if you have any special dietary requirements.
